L'histoire du Lagotto / Lagotto history
Le Lagotto Romagnolo (Lah-gah’-à Ro-man-yo’-lo) est une ancienne race italienne qui était à l'origine utilisée comme chien de chasse et chien d'eau. Le nom de la race vient du mot italien "Lago" qui signifie "lac". Originaire des marais de Ravenne et des basses terres de Comacchio, qui se trouve dans la sous-région de la Romagne, en Italie. On pense que les racines de la race remontent au moins à 1474 après JC. Lorsque les marais ont été drainés vers la fin du 19e siècle et transformés en terres arables, la race a disparu et le Lagotto avait besoin de trouver une nouvelle utilitée. Grace à leur flaire très développé ainsi que leur agilité naturelle, ils se sont révélés très efficaces pour la chasse à la truffe et ils sont donc la seule race reconnu de chiens truffier.
Dans les années 1920, la race s'externuait, avec le peu d'intérêt à renouveler cette ancienne race. Dans les années 1970, il ne restait plus que quelques passionnés de la race (Quintino Toschi, Prof. Francesco Ballotta, Dr. Antonio Morsiani et Lodovico Babini)qui ont décidé de faire de ce chien une race reconnue. En 1988, ils ont créé le C.I.L (Club Italiano Lagotto), et en 1995, la race a été officiellement reconnue par le F.C.I.
The Lagotto Romagnolo (Lah-gah’-to Ro-man-yo’-lo) is an ancient Italian breed that was originally used as a hunting dog and water retriever. The breed’s own name comes from the Italian word “Lago” which means “lake”. Originating from the marshlands of Ravenna and the lowlands of Comacchio, which is in the sub-region of Romagna, Italy. The breed’s roots are thought to go back at least to 1474 A.D (Pre-Romans). When the marshlands were drained towards the end of the 19th century and turned into arable land, the vast Lagotto Breed – Historyflocks of waterfowl disappeared and the Lagotto needed to find a new purpose. With their highly tuned nose for searching things out, their keen senses and natural agility they have proven to be very efficient in truffle hunting and are the only dog bred for this purpose.
By the 1920’s the breed was diminishing, with little interest in renewing this ancient breed. In the 1970’s with just a few Lagotto’s remaining some Romagnan enthusiasts (Quintino Toschi, Prof. Francesco Ballotta, Dr. Antonio Morsiani and Lodovico Babini) decided to establish this dog as a recognized breed. In 1988 they established C.I.L (Club Italiano Lagotto), and in 1995 the breed was officially recognized by the F.C.I.
